Ecuador has a variety of climates and landscapes, so it can be hard to know when is the best time to visit. Like most destinations, it depends on what you would like to do and the regions you would like to see. So let me ask you, where are you hoping to travel in Ecuador? From the Galapagos Islands to Quito and the Amazon, discover the best time to visit Ecuador!
Best Time to Visit the Highlands
Are you a city person? I know I am! To visit Quito, surrounded by the Andes Mountains in the Highlands, you better have a heads up on the winter season. Winter in the Andes lasts from June – September, with chilly but dry weather. Summer, on the other hand, coincides with the rainy season so you may experience some occasional rain showers. I recommend that you visit the Andes in Ecuador, or Quito, in the dry season from June to September, the temperatures may be slightly lower, but the dry weather makes for the perfect opportunity to see the colonial highlights on a guided city tour!
Best Time to Visit the Coast
For travelers headed to the coast of Ecuador, take note that the dry season from late May to November is unbearably cool, and the sky remains a gloomy overcast. That being said, the best time to bask in the sun is from January to April. During these months, the weather is much warmer with sun-kissed mornings and a few rain showers in the afternoon.
Best Time to Visit the Galapagos Islands
If you’re dead set on visiting the Galapagos Islands (because really, who wouldn’t be?), I have some great news for you. The wildlife in the Galapagos Islands is visible during any time of the year! Now, if you’re looking for a particular species or activity, such as baby sea lions being born, there are specific periods of the year when that occurs. For prime boating weather, visit the Galapagos from December to May. During this period you can expect the warmest weather, calm seas, and plenty of visible wildlife. Slap on your Sperry Topsider’s and SPF 50, because boating, snorkeling, and swimming are fabulous activities during this time of the year.
Best Time to Visit Ecuador’s Amazon Rainforest
Did you forget that the Amazon Rainforest is part of Ecuador? It’s okay if you did, it is only a small sliver of the country. BUT, even the small section of the Amazon, that Ecuador hosts, is full of dense jungle, wildlife and culture. Usually, on vacation, I try to avoid the rain and look for any sign of sun, but when it comes to the Amazon, it rains year-round. Without frequent rain showers, the abundance of bright greenery and exotic animal species would not be present, so let’s all remember to thank Mother Nature because while it may be raining, the misty weather is an authentic Amazon experience. However, if you are traveling in the months between December to March, you may experience some slightly drier weather.
The peak season for travel in Ecuador is from June to August and September to late December. If you are planning a trip to Ecuador during this time, make sure to book well in advance! However, if you avoid these months, you might be able to encounter lower prices and fewer crowds. The choice is yours, and I’m sure that whatever you choose, will be wonderful!
